Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen, who recently retired from playing football, has said that he is surprised that the link between Arsenal and Luis Suarez. The Liverpool striker has been linked heavily with a move away from Anfield. However, so far it has been transfer rumours linking him with Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Arsenal have come out of nowhere to emerge as one of the favourites to secure his signature. They are the only club to have made an official offer for the 26-year-old. Instead of rejecting any links, Suarez is thought to have asked the Liverpool the permission to speak with Arsenal.
Owen has said that he is surprised by this development because it does not think Arsenal are better than Liverpool when it comes to history and tradition.

Liverpool have won five European cups in their illustrious history, while Arsenal are yet to get off the mark. As a result, the former Liverpool and Manchester United striker says that it would be understandable if Suarez wanted to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, he does not understand the links with Arsenal.

Further, one of Suarez' main reasons behind looking to move away is his frustration with the English media and FA, which he will not be able to avoid if he moves to Arsenal.

"Arsenal are a fabulous club and have got a great heritage, but Liverpool are as big - if not bigger. I'd be very surprised if he were to move to Arsenal. Madrid or Barcelona would make more sense. I'm struggling to understand why he would leave and stay in England with Liverpool being the stature they are. From Suarez's point of view you can understand him if he wants to reach the absolute pinnacle of the game - that's playing in the Champions League. Liverpool obviously are not in that at the moment," said Owen.
